RE: Geopak SS2 vs. Geopak SS3 and OpenRoads

Hi kcaitch,

your post hasn't really generated much chatter... so I thought I'd provide what we have found in our evaluation of SS3 InRoads and maybe that will stimulate others to respond. Maybe.

We have not looked at Survey - all our survey is done by external contractors... so no need.

We've certainly had a pretty good look into terrains, geometry, corridor tools and features.

Overall, as a first release, the delivered tools are pretty good. There are bugs (no surprise for a first release), but what is a surprise is that there are not as many as expected and, to this point, we haven't discovered any "show stoppers".

In theory, there is supposed to be an update in Q1, 2014 that should address a load of bugs.

The available tools are heavily focused towards corridor design and this module is solid.

Terrains (DTMs) are good - though there are some bugs in some of the tools and the user experience is a little inconsistent.

Geometry tools seem OK. Again, some bugs and inconsistencies, but no "show stoppers".

Features function as designed. They are quite complex to set up and you should have them fully set up before embarking on real design projects as trying to fix them "on the run" is a frustrating and time consuming exercise.

So... if your design focus is corridors, then its probably worth a serious look.

Our design projects typically involve a lot of Site design and those tools are lacking, so we will need to wait.

HTHs
