I spoke to Bentley Select Support over the phone as well after I made this post. The person I spoke with coordinated with some developers and they advised that I would likely only be able to create a chain from 3000 to 3500 points depending on how defined these points were, meaning if they had feature codes, elevations and etc I would have to use less points. Well the most points I could create a chain from was 1000 and I was only able to get that to work once before the software continually crashed when I tried again.
I never got any error messages, however if I tried a large amount of points like over 1000, it would simply ask me to input a chain name when I clearly had done that already (see above original post). Also the one time it did store the alignment from the 1000 points it took nearly 45 minutes of the computer thinking before it was able to do that. I was anticipating having 280,000 points when all said and done and if it would take that long to store 1000 points, I would never get anywhere. I decided to take a different approach to my problem, namely not using Geopak.
FYI, I was trying to create an alignment of the Appalachian Trail, all 2178.3 miles of it. I figured if the mechanics were there and the few test cases I tried confirmed this, it would scale up....it didn't. Oh well, thanks for replies though!
FYI, I am using:
Microstation V8i (SELECTseries2) - Version 08.11.07.443
GEOPAK V8i (SELECTseries2) - Version 08.11.07.615
I had encountered an issue in the past with having too many points for one project and I believe then it was related to the license agreement not allowing that many points, or maybe that was Bentley StormCAD...?
