RE: Geopak, maximum number of points I can use to create a chain

We are doing a walking competition in our office, where employees wear a pedometer, each step counts for 2.5 feet and it is a virtual walk of the Appalachian Trail. I was hoping to make a Geopak alignment out an ESRI Shapefile I found of the trail's alignment online so that all I had to do was using Curvilinear Coordinates enter a station number based on the cumulative feet each team walks and then snap to the point where they are located on the trail. It is only at the level of detail that I have it at because to reduce it to less detail (I thought anyway) would take more work than just using what I found online.

What I have decided to do instead is just pick a lot of the line segments and measure them and add or subtract line segments to the selection set until I get close to the mileage each team has walked.

I have also thought of hiking sections of the trail myself and thought this would serve as a good planning resource, especially because I have correlated a profile to the alignment based on elevation measurements I also found online along the trail at approximately every 0.2 miles.
