style lock for view drainage as solids

I am trying to display my inlets and utilities in S&S in 3d using the view drainage as solids command and with the style lock on so that it looks to the individual inlet (or utility) for the style to use for display. When the style lock is off and I use the dialog box to display my inlets using the same style, everything displays fine. When I turn the style lock on, my inlets disappear. Some of my inlets are using the same style as I used to display them with the lock off, so it isn't an issue that the symbology settings aren't set up. Any explanation for this??
