[OR Survey] Generating Custom Error Messages

$

We are still in Ss4, so our labeling capabilities are limited to VBA macros. However, we are getting into areas where sometimes the data is not consistent. For example, our crews shoot pipe inverts as DNC breaklines. In Ss2 and earlier, there would be DTM features and we could display a cell using a circle on cross sections. So now we are enabling the creation of 3D pipes from this data. While we have codes for all pipe sizes, we have a SZ ant a TY attribute for Size and Material Type. These are coded on each pipe invert shot. On occasion, a crew will code different data on each shot. In Code, we can check on this. Ideally, we'd like to add some type of error indication, similar to some of the error icons that appear when Open Roads detects something not correct.

Do the VBA modules of OR Ss4 or ORD have the ability to place an alert or error icon that can be clicked on to reveal some information in the message center?

ORD - How do you report on linear feature?

How do you report on linear feature?  I want x,y,z of linear feature generated by corridor.

None of the report (station base or station offset) seam to work.  They only give the alignement x,y,z and offset to the elements (features).

So how do we do?

SS4 OpenRoads Technology w/ Geopak End Condition and Cross Section Viewer Problem

I am having a few problems figuring things out.

I am having problems viewing any cross sections through my corridor.

Also, I have a template created for the corridor where the left end conditions are not showing up as part of the model, but the daylights do.

I have checked the template and compared the left and right and am unable to determine what the problem is.

Does anyone have some ideas why this is happening?

Below is the 3D view and the 2D view with 3D mesh showing.

[ORD] Survey Rotate Point

Ok Bentley, need to understand why in ORD version 2018 Release 3 and ORD version 2018 Release 4 when I add a control code of Join Point "Point Number" the symbol that is on that point does not rotate?

It worked that way in SS4 and previous versions. I am using the same data and workflows in both SS4 and ORD. See image below for graphical representation of the problem.

Thanks,

Hello all,

I am trying to model in SS2, but I am having trouble because of an error.

Can someone tell me why I might be having this error.
I am unable to import the plan graphics.

Thanks!

ORD Profile disappears

My profiles have disappeared from my drawing. I am working in ORD 2019 rel 1. I created profiles successfully using the Named Boundary command. The drawing model and sheet model looked good at first. When I restarted my computer the next day and opened the profile drawing, my profiles were missing. The drawing model still has the annotation for the profile, but my existing ground and proposed grade linework is gone. From the drawing model the reference for the profile says "Model not found - (AttachedLongSection)". I don't have the option to Reload the reference. I created a new profile successfully. I restarted my computer twice. The profile linework disappeared again. Does anyone have an idea what is happening?

Will OR have any allowance for hand-editing cross sections?

I know this speaks more to workflow than software development, but I do not believe that the workflow will disappear just because the software develops.

I understand that the corridor model is the desired output from Openroads, and if everything is done 100% correctly, the model will account for all of the design in a project. When that is achieved, all quantities can be developed from that model.

I am concerned that not all projects can or will be done to 100% completion via modeling. If the software has no options for hand editing, or processing after hand edits are made, it is going to create more work.
I work with several older engineers. They are not planning to retire any time soon. To them, the time spent creating templates and end conditions and all of the controls to fit every single condition perfectly is wasted because "we could just draw it and be done by now". I have one engineer who will not use modeling at all, and draws his proposed cross sections by hand if the job is "short enough".

Geopak calculated earthwork end areas by examining the elements of each cross sections, and using those to determine areas. While this is less precise then generating a complete corridor and comparing model volumes, it was very useful because it allowed for hand editing of cross sections when necessary without completely breaking the usefulness of the sections.  What options will OpenRoads offer to engineers who choose to only utilize a portion of the software?
Or, if you don't use it all (perfectly) you will just be out of luck?

Conceptstation divided highway

I am trying to do a interchange. There is a North-South highway that is divided with a paved median.

The problem I am running into is the fact that each direction is on its own horizontal and vertical alignment.

How do you set this up in conceptstation?

Computer Processing Power for OpenRoads

I've started with a new company and I've started modeling more in OpenRoads with SS4 and Geopak. OpenRoads is new to me, but I do have experience with InRoads modeling. I've been watching another engineer working on his station recently and noticed how slow it is to process and how he has to separate the model to allow the computer to keep up. I have some other colleges at other firms that do modeling that have killed multiple computers modeling and have convinced their firm to get them a high end gaming computer.

I'm curious what everyone else is using and get an opinion on what is economical and efficient for working in modeling with OpenRoads.

The computer they just got me is an Intel Xeon 3.3GHz with 16 GB of RAM on Windows 10. This is similar to the other engineer using a Xeon 3.6 GHz with 16 GB of RAM on Windows 7 mentioned that separates everything.

Thank you in advance.

Learning tools

We may be required to dive deep in the Bentley products to provide training materials. So this is going to be a long road as we need to learn ourselves.

Can anyone point us to learning materials and resources for the Bentley products equivalent to Civil 3D?

Thank you.

Wanted: Civil 3D User Experiences with OpenRoads

I am a Civil 3D user who is not happy with the software. I'd like to hear from C3D users who have experience with OpenRoads. I have Power Civil SS1 so I have some background with Microstation but I haven't used it for plan production since it is old technology and I didn't want to spend time learning the tools. My current workflow is to do my site modeling in Power Civil and export it to Civil 3D via LandXML for pipe design and plan production.

My main concerns are product stability, performance, pipe networks and plan production. Please feel free to share your experience with me in private if you wish.

Creating Delta Terrains

Hi All,
I'm struggling to create Delta Terrain's from design surfaces to existing surfaces. I've watched a few video's on the topic and it seems very simple, I've even had it working on an other project. But for what ever reason I can't get it working on my current project.

I'm creating the terrain in a fresh 3d file and referencing the other terrains in.

Does anybody have any tips or tricks? Can anybody think of anything I'm likely to be missing?

Thanks

Error in transition, when apply superelevation in ORD

SS4 .904

Question.

When using the analyze volumes tool, the resulting quantity between two terrains should be the same as the quantity as a delta terrain built from the same surfaces and analyze volumes performed against a plane elevation 0.00'.  But, it is not.

We have a project with the following results comparing existing to proposed (analyze volumes).

Cut Factor = 1.0000

Fill Factor = 1.0000

Cut = 6254773.6620 sf3

Fill = 4400699.4384 sf3

Balance = -1854074.2236 sf3 = 68,669.42 cy

We then generated a delta terrain between the same terrains, then used analyze volumes terrain to plane of 0.00 and had the following results.

Cut Factor = 1.0000

Fill Factor = 1.0000

Cut = 6255136.0495 sf3

Fill = 4405001.8043 sf3

Balance = -1850134.2452 sf3

We get the same result regardless of using boundaries.  Could someone try to explain.

Critical Sections in SS4 not generated

Power InRoads SS4 (08.11.09.904)

In the Create Cross Sections dialog, Controls, Critical Sections part...  I check off Horizontal and Vertical Cardinal Points because I want sections drawn at those stations.  They don't get created.

Is this known NOT to work?  Trying to determine why I don't get sections automatically drawn at those stations.  Any inputs?

ORD Vertical geometry/alignment

Hi,

We have chosen to use ORD to every new project. We are former MX ss4 users and have worked with OpenRoads tool in ss4 but in ss4 we were still using MX inputfiles to make horisontal and vertical alignments.

So its new to us to create alignments with Openroads tools but working with it we have come across some things that seems strange to us and hopefully someone can help us with:

Question 1: Trying to do a fixed curve with "profile curve between points" placement method: "highlow/end"

Case: wishes to do a curve from a high point and be able to see the solution with different radius afterwards. wishes to fix the station and level for the highpoint

Activates the civil accudraw to fixed the highpoint:

Accepting the locks above - and lock the radius and accept this:

It seems like I now have got the desired outcome but then when I want to see different solutions - maybe more relevant in a combination but it behaves in the same manner:

1. desired change: want to change the settings for the highpoint but wants to keep the radius:

then locks it to the desired new station and level and accept. Can get this to work but it also change my radius which I want to keep:

So that is my first question: what am I doing wrong here?

2. desired change: instead of changing station and level for the highpoint I want to change the radius

Back to starting point, then i choose radiusand tap in the new radius: e.g. 6000 and accept

Now it behaves like below?:

If I want to keep my highpoint as a starting point what to do?

I can see that if I also changes the length I can put it on place but its breaking up the alignment in a combined alignment so it is not working for us in practice:

Question 2: A sag/concave curve

The curve is placed as a lowpoint like above

and now I want to change the radius to e.g. 5000 but now the curve automatically changes the curve to a convex/hog curve???

What to do here?

Hopefully some of you can help us with an answer?

Open Roads Designer on Citrix

I have seen some posts on this but they are over a year old so I will ask the question again

Is there support for Open Roads designer in a virtualized environment like Citrix - I thought MicroStation Connect is supported in Citrix (maybe I read that wrong)

Has anyone tried using ORD in Citrix and what issues have you seen?

[OR Ss4] Survey Coding TMPL - Gone Rogue

$

I'm working with a TDS RW5 file, originally coded for InRoads Survey. It is a sample file used for training. It uses a number of TMPL codes, most of which work as expected. But this one that was a top of curb, bottom of curb and gutter edge was doing something unexpected. The master figure is create with a code of BC ST PC TMPL and the two parallel figures are started with TC ST PC and EPR ST PC.

So what is the problem? THis is what it looks like on screen with all three figures selected. Notice the locations of the two offset figures compared to their Manipulators locations. And, if I change the code on the master figure to an ST, they suddenly draw correctly but are no longer curved figures. Adding a ArcSingle to the middle point to try an reintroduce the curved figure results in the figure resetting it back to the bogus offsets. And changing the ST PC to an ST on either parallel figure starting point completely removes the figure from the file, renumbering similar figures in the process.

So far, the other TMPL codes in the file seem OK.

Apparently, I spoke too soon. I've found a few others where no parallel figures are created and no amount of edits seems to change anything. If I had to make a recommendation, I'd probably recommend not using the TMPL code.

Culvert in Subsurface Utilities?

$

I'm working on a highway project. It"s a 38km long highway with many existing and new culvert. First step would be to modeld the existing one to include in the corridor.  It's my first time working within the Subsurface Utilities menu.

So far all i've seen is that you need to layout a node before being able to place a pipe. In my case, the existing culverts don't have headwalls, grate, CB or MH. So how can i place a culvert without having to place a node before?

Thanks

Gilles
